Studies & Exploration

This is a collection of landscape and character studies drawn in Adobe Photoshop.

New Techniques

I’ve included both school assignments and personal practice.

These studies will explore Photoshop’s tools as I transition from Procreate to Photoshop for digital painting. Trying something new is the best thing you can do for your art; you never know what may become of your experiments. Try a new brush, tool, effect, ratio/grid, etc… Do anything.

Animation Assignment

Here is an assignment for my animation class.

Bold Brushwork

This study was an exploration of bold brushes in Photoshop: simple shapes and clear lines.

More triangles

Forests/Tree practice.

The Process

  • Sketch

Roughly outline where the elements will be place in the scene. Colors can be used to separate a character from the background. Minor shading markers for use in the next step.

  • Value Drawing

Block in the largest shapes in grayscale to achieve the right composition and contrast in the scene. Brush strokes still generally large, we are less worried about fine details and more about making a composition that could be an abstract artwork.

  • Color and Refinement

Gradient Maps cover the canvas quickly and accurately over my black and white sketches. Masks are used to show and hide selections of color. Refining touches are added and the rough concept design is finished in just a few hours.
